The Importance of a Professional Email

Sounds like a silly topic, right?

In my years as a career counselor I have seen the gamut of off-the-wall email addresses:

lazyboy@…

NotATaxi@…

IDriveKidsCrazy@…

YourBugaboo@…

Parrothead@…

CyclingChef@…

ILoveMyGodson@…

StinkyDog@…

And my all-time favorite:

NoOneHasThisNameSoHa@…

Probably not a good idea to send a resume with the email LazyBoy@email.com on it!

A coworker tells the story of a registered nurse she met a few years ago, who had been laid off from Western State Hospital. She had worked in their psychiatric ward. This jobseeker was confused about why she wasn’t getting interviews, seeing as registered nurses were in high demand. Looking at her resume revealed a hint:

Email: PsychoNurse@…

I have even had emails bounce back unsent when doing email blasts, because our security-heavy email wouldn’t allow an email sent an address whose name was too explicit to share in polite company! And that email was on their Unemployment profile!

A word to the wise: have a professional email address. I’m not saying to abandon the address you’ve used for years; only to add an extra address or alias. Many email accounts allow you to add an alias to your existing account (Hotmail and Yahoo both have this feature), allowing you to create a more professional address and attach it to your existing account. So when you receive mail for either your original address or your extra address, they both end up in the same inbox—without having to forward messages. How easy is that?

In any case, keep the HotLips@ off the official documents!
